So I'm watching my newest crop of rookies load their cars prior to hitting the streets, and one of them--one who is carrying WAY too much gear--is putting his second duty bag in the trunk of the cruiser. The trunk is already packed to the gills with other stuff, but he puts his bag in and slams the trunk anyway, compressing everything. A moment later, however, a yellowish cloud begins to envelop the rear of that cruiser, causing everyone else in the parking lot to stop whhat they're doing and stare. The rook looks at me for guidance, and he gets it as I yell at him: "Don't just stand there--do something! Get that trunk back open!"
You see, I already know what that is. I know what he did. Now I just want him to figure it out.
Sure enough, he opens the trunk to find that everything inside--including his oversized duffle bag that's filled with everything that some huckster at the police supply store convinced him that he might need someday--is coated with yellowish dry chemical from the fire extinguisher whose lever he'd compressed when he threw his bag on top of it and slammed the trunk shut. As a result of that careless moment, the entire extinguisher has emptied itself in the trunk, and now the contents of the trunk--and the interior of the cruiser--are dusted nicely withe the chemical.
So my new rookie spent the next hour and a half pulling everything out of the trunk and cleaning it, then getting the car vacuumed out, and then he had to go back to his locker and change, because now HE was covered with dry chemical. And of course that crap's all over the station parking lot now.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...I could not possibly have been that green when I came on the job. No way.
Buyer Beware...

No, never. Of course not! Nope.
Better dry chemical extinguishing agent than pepper spray.
Also, I wonder if there are any 80 year old retired cops that would agree with your statement?
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH omg that's too funny!!!
It will get better i'm sure it will.... eventually!

Almost as good as a rookie who blew a big whole in the trunk while loading his shotgun. Very fortunate it was a straight through the side fender shot. He got no mercy.
To be fair, I do recall a rookie classmate of mine who did a similar thing with his pepper spray dispenser in the gym locker room, angering the rest of us beyond belief, but he was a retard who only got hired because his father and uncle were on the job, and nobody missed him when he went off and got himself a federal security guard position a long ways away.
I am planning to go into law enforcement after I graduate in a few months. Here is hoping I won't be THAT bad lol.
I was worried it was something else at first, too. But gawd that dry chem makes a hell of a mess. Lesson learned, we hope.
I guess it is not just us fire and EMS guys that have to help the new kids learn the want/need balance of the crap we carry.
In comparison...
Fortunately, the "rookie hairdresser" only makes a mess with water when he or she lets go of the nozzle while the water is turned on. :) It's happened to all of us.
i wonder if earned himself a new nickname after this incident...
Ha. That would have been funny to see, but I'm not a cop and I'm wonndering what do they sell at poilce supply stores anyway?
Love it!!! Especially when every single rookie bride out there says "My guy is the greatest ever and every officer wants to ride with him because he knows so much". Yeah... you keep telling yourself that. :)
Yeah, except in all likelihood you were. In my first year I hit the pumps at EOW one night, stuffed the fuel filler, logged my mileage, pulled the paper out of my posse box, and heard the nozzle click. I took the rest of the stuff out of my passenger seat, fixed my bags, put them back into the trunk and
of course drove away from the pumps with the hose still attached.
No, hell no, we never did shit like that as rookies. No way.

ha ha. The Mr. was ready for the city after being a cop in a previous town. Took a few years doing something else but he got back in the line of duty again and loves it. He always has silly even scary stories about his rookies LOL
